Obituary of Alison Mary Laird

On Thursday June 12, 2008, Alison Mary Laird, beloved wife, Mum, and friend passed from this life peacefully, in the presence of family at Foothills Medical Centre at the age of 60 years. Alison’s courageous seven year battle with a spinal chordoma was hard fought and inspired all who knew and treated her. She showed grace and fortitude throughout her ordeal and never let her spirit waiver, even at the most difficult times. Alison was born in Edinburgh, Scotland to parents Irene and the late James Russell. She attended James Gillespie’s School for Girls and later Murray House College of Education, graduating with a Diploma in Education. Her career started as a Primary School Teacher at James Gillespie’s School for Boys, and continued teaching in other schools in Scotland. After the family moved to Canada in 1979, Alison continued her career as an adult educator and parenting counsellor. Alison’s passions included travelling, camping, gardening, reading, writing, dancing and enjoying a glass of wine with friends and family. Her love of the ocean inspired her to visit exotic beach destinations, and later motivated her to take up sailing. We thank her for instilling in us all, a passion for life and family, and allowing us to follow our own paths. We will always carry with us the words of Goethe that she loved so much, "Nothing is worth more than this day." Alison was adored in life and will be forever missed by her family. She leaves behind Ian, loving husband of nearly thirty-six years; daughter, Catriona; sons, Ben and his wife Kelly, Robin and his girlfriend Robin. In Scotland, she will be greatly missed by her brother John and Mum Irene; brother and sister-in-law Lindsay and Marilyn; nieces Holly and Fiona and mother-in-law, Nessie. Tuk, the family dog will also feel her absence. A Celebration of Alison’s Life will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church (400 Midpark Blvd. S.E.) on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
