Obituary of Florence McKenzie
Florence Grace McKenzie, of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at the age of 84 years.
Born on May 18, 1923 in Goodwater, SK, Florence was raised there on the family farm. After leaving school, she joined the women’s division of the RCAF, where she served during World War II. Following the war, Florence took a business course in Regina and upon completion, went to work for Steele Briggs Seeds, later transferring to Calgary as a Western Canada Sales (Industrial) Administrator for Maple Leaf Milling Co., where she retired in May 1988. While in Regina, Florence was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church. In Calgary, Florence had been a member of St. Paul’s United Church, where she sang in the choir and upon its closure, she became an active member of Grace Presbyterian Church. Music was a large part of Florence’s life. She was an active volunteer for many years with the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, the Mustard Seed, Inn From the Cold and several other charities. Her work also included quilting and knitting garments for those in need. Throughout her life, she was a very giving person and made her nieces and nephews a large part of her life.
Florence is survived by three sisters, Jean (Reg) Edey of Regina, Mary Hotz of Regina and Mildred Gaudry of Lethbridge. Florence is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Norma Kingdon, Allen Edey, Stewart Edey, Ken Edey, Gwen Edey, John McKenzie, Bruce McKenzie, Betty Wyatt, Graham McKenzie, Lee Gaudry, Susann Nagy, Berna-Dean Holland, Debbie Irvine, Gail Knutson, and Dianne Hotz; as well as numerous great nieces and nephews. Florence was predeceased by her parents; two infant siblings Norma and Norman; two brothers Jack and Donald (Agnes) McKenzie; sister Margaret (Walter) Cain; two brothers-in-law, James Gaudry and Eldie Hotz; and two nephews, Gregory Hotz and Terry Cain.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S “Park Memorial Chapel” (5008 Elbow Drive South West, Calgary) on Sunday, April 20, 2008 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church (1009 – 15th Avenue South West) on Monday, April 21, 2008 at 1:00 pm. Graveside Service to follow in Goodwater, SK on a later date.
