Obituary of Marjorie E. Reid

Marjorie Elizabeth Reid (nee Lee) of Calgary passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the age of 89 years. June 4, 1918 in Alsask, SK marked the day that Marjorie Elizabeth Reid (nee Lee) was born into the world. After living on the Prairies, her parents moved her to Moncton, NB to spend time living the farming life. The next stop on Marjorie’s life was Sherbrooke, QC. She spent her high school years there until she decided to venture to the big city of Quebec City. Working for Price Brother’s Pulp and Paper, she met the love of her live. Hector Chalmers Reid did not stand a chance. In July 1943 Marjorie took a train ride from Quebec City to Jasper, Alberta to meet Hector and get married. On July 10th, of that year they had an army marriage at the Jasper United Church and then moved west to Prince George, BC to start their life together. Marjorie’s love for animals started even then, when she was constantly guarded by a Great Dane that was almost as big as her. After the war, Marjorie and Hector moved back to Quebec City to start the next phase of their lives. Sons Ian and Stuart came along shortly thereafter. Annual summer trips to Lake St Jean, QC and then later on to the United States to swim, suntan and visit with friends were a great time. There were also summer vacations at the cottage in Lake St Joseph, QC. Marjorie took on the job of Secretary for the Chalmers Wesley United Church and kept things running smoothly in her efficient ways. As the years moved along there were great family outings with the Poulins, Andersons and Reids which made for some great card games and discussions. There were always dogs (Cocker Spaniels and Cairn Terriers) to keep Marjorie occupied while she sat around the pool sun tanning and reading her books. Weekly bridge with her friends helped pass the time as well as curling with Hector and their two sons. Retirement found Marjorie and Hector moving to Burlington, ON to spend a few quality years. Their winters were usually spent in Florida where they enjoyed the warm sun, water and friends. The next stop on Marjorie’s life saw her and Hector moving to Tillsonburg, ON to enjoy some warmer summer and winter weather in a retirement setting. Meeting lots of friends, playing bridge, reading and swimming in those years were an added bonus. Then along came the decision to move to a Retirement complex in London, ON where new friends and bridge partners were found. During this time she had Blue Eyes and Peaches her two beautiful Himalayan cats to keep her company. Then two years ago she moved west to Calgary, AB close to where she began her life. Playing bridge with her new found friends, reading more mystery novels, watching curling, seeing the horse jumping at Spruce Meadows, visiting Kelowna, BC and having a chance to see her grandchildren grow has helped to cap off the wonderful life that Marjorie so enjoyed. Family, Friends, Reading, playing Bridge and Animals were Marjorie’s passions in life. Marjorie is survived by two sons and their spouses, Ian and Joanne of Toronto, ON, Stuart and Brenda,; and two grandchildren, Amber and Taylor, all of Calgary. She is also survived by her sister Betty in Sherbrooke, QC. She was predeceased by her husband Hector Chalmers Reid.
