Obituary of William George Phipps

William (Bill) George Phipps, beloved husband of Margaret of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the age of 71 years. Bill was born in Bassano, AB on September 7, 1936 to Harry and Frances Phipps, brother to Wally. He was raised in the Bassano area, and after graduating from high school, he began working for Canadian Pacific Railway in 1955. Bill was an accomplished machinist, working between Alyth and Ogden shops until 1975. During this time, he attended the University of Calgary, attaining his Bachelor of Education degree. From 1975 until 2001 Bill began a new challenge as a teacher with the Calgary Catholic School Board at Bishop Grandin followed by St. Francis High Schools. He always took pride in his students, teaching them academic as well as real work skills. Bill married Margaret in 1964 – his beloved wife and best friend of forty-four years. His family and friends were always the priority and number one concern in every aspect of his life. Bill enjoyed pheasant hunting in the fall and always returned to the Bassano area – his home away from home. Bill was an avid supporter of the blood donor clinic and was always active in his community well-being. Bill loved riding his Harley-Davidson and taking one of the classic cars for a cruise and a milkshake. William Phipps was a special man, a loving, caring husband and father, and a friend to many. His great personality and smile will always be remembered and carried in our hearts. Besides his loving wife Margaret, Bill is survived by his daughter Natalie Phipps-Tyreman and son Russell Phipps.
