Obituary of Olive Cecil Campbell

Olive Campbell, of Calgary, peacefully passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2008 with her family at her side. Olive was born in Provost Alberta and grew up and attended school in Lloydminster. A graduate physio-therapist from the University of Toronto she worked at Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax helping many injured WW ll soldiers and Veterans get a new start. Again in Edmonton during the epidemic she worked tirelessly with iron lung polio victims preserving their muscles and mobility for their recovery. Olive and Don met at the University of Alberta and were married in Edmonton in 1950. Following his work requirements, they travelled extensively in the Far East, Ceylon, India, and to New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, Europe, Britain and Scotland, bringing back new customs and cultures to their family and friends. Their children, Helen Sharon of Waterloo, Ontario, Donna Leslie of Calgary and Colin Mason and his wife Jan of Ottawa grew up with love, sage advice and a constant supply of home baked chocolate chip cookies. She also leaves her sister Kay Shepherd of Lloydminster and her family, and many nieces and nephews in Ontario. Olive was a keen bridge player and has a wide circle of friends from the many bridge clubs and other activities she belonged to over the last several decades. She maintained her luxurious garden and was an active community volunteer working to improve the lives of others. She was on the Board of Meals on Wheels, served on the Board of the YWCA, worked for the United Way and was a supporter and campaigner for the Canadian Cancer Society. Her greatest enjoyment came from belonging to the Rotary family where she was President of Rotary Anns in 1976. She was a tireless worker for the Rotary show and one of a few recipients of the John Shipley Award, she baked and served at Senior Citizens parties and the Rotary Stampede BBQ for many, many years. Olive was a Paul Harris Fellow and exemplified the motto “Service above Self”. Kind and generous, these simple words best describe this remarkable lady who will be missed by all who knew her. At her request there will be no funeral service.
