Obituary of Anita Meek
Anita Meek passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at the age of 88 years.
Anita was born in Willow Bunch, SK. She graduated high school in Nipawin, SK and was recruited as a star woman baseball player to Regina, SK, where she graduated from Regina Normal School. She began her career as an Educator and Administrator at Luing School in Meteor, SK. She also met and married the love of her life, Ivan Gerald Meek, in Meteor. Her teaching career took her to Calgary, AB and a period teaching in Invermere, BC. She obtained her Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta with a French and Drama major, and was enrolled in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, leading to her M.Ed. at the University of Calgary. She obtained a Senior Certificate in drama from the Banff School of Fine Arts in 1958, and was certified by the Calgary Board of Education in Diagnosis and Treatment of Reading Difficulties. She retired from the CBE in 1984 as an Assistant Principal and teacher at Fred Parker Elementary School in Calgary. She was instrumental in establishing the early French Immersion program in Calgary and touched the hearts of thousands of “her kids” during her teaching career. Anita was an active participant in the congregation of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Calgary. She was the focal point of a loving and admiring family.
Anita is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Karen Meek; her daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Don Hartwick, and Mariette and Rob Jessup; her grandchildren, Brendan Meek and Serina Rayner, Mark Michaluk, Paul Michaluk, Tara (Tony) Belland, Steffan Hartwick, Megan Hartwick, Shauna (Jake) Green, Jaden Jessup and Nicholas Jessup; her great grandchildren, Brady Belland, Jacob and Teagan Green. She will also be missed by her fellow mothers and grandmothers, particularly “The Hartwicks” and Betty Sorenson; numerous loving relations and friends, particularly Shirley Wong, Irena Kirek, Barry Roberts, Don and Deanna Patterson, Yvonne Beaubien, Amy Okazaki, Henriette Miller, and Sabina Nakagane with whom she spent many family, holiday and caring occasions. Anita was predeceased by her husband, Ivan Gerald Meek in 1982.
Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church (4718 Worcester Drive S.W.) on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 3:00 p.m.
