Obituary of Donald George Thomson

Donald George Thomson of Calgary passed away on Friday, February 14, 2008, at the age of 63 years.

Don was born in Kyle, SK on March 31, 1944. He lived the first 8 years of his life at Port Mellon, BC, and then the family moved back to Kyle. There he grew up and took all of his schooling. He worked with the Saskatchewan Parks Department for a while, and in June 1968 Don joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He took his basic training course at Cornwallis, NS, was transferred to Esquimalt, BC, and from there worked on board the destroyer, H.M.C.S. MacKenzie. On September 21, 1974, Don married Nancy Hutchinson in the Chapel by the Sea on the Canadian Forces Base in Esquimalt, BC. Besides becoming a husband, he also became a father to Nancy’s children- seven-year-old Michael and eight-year-old Mandy. Don loved the Navy, being at sea and visiting many ports around the world but that meant so much time away from his family. In June 1975, he left the Navy with an honourable discharge and they moved to Calgary. Don then worked for CWD Windows & Doors until his illness. Don will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Don is survived by his mother Isabelle of High River; brothers, Rodney of Swift Current, SK, and Laurie (Tracy) of Moose Jaw, SK; sisters Rhonda (Tom Clements) of Calgary, Beverly (Ron Kornsee) of Lacadena, SK, and Sheryl of Calgary; his stepchildren Michael and Mandy; and many nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his father George Thomson, sister Marlene Torrance, and his wife Nancy.
