Obituary of Harper Thornton

Harper Thornton of Calgary passed away at home on Thursday, January 31, 2008. He was born in Manor, SK, the son of the local hardware store owner. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Jeannie, who he met and married in Calgary in 1944 where he had signed up to serve in WWII. Following the war he obtained a Pharmacy degree and spent his professional career in Calgary as the owner of Harper’s Drugs and later the Head of Pharmacy at the Rockyview General Hospital. Harper was always a “snappy” dresser and always had twinkle in his eye. Even in his last few years, when his memory was failing he would smile and respond when asked “How are you?” with “I’m still sober”. He will be remembered by all as a “true gentleman” and will especially be missed by Bill and Lorna Rennie and their children, Ryan, Stacey, Heather and Gillian who considered him to be their Grandpa, and by all of his many devoted nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church (4612 Varsity Drive N.W.) on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of Harper Thornton, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296.
