Obituary of Womack; C.A., D.S.C.

On Wednesday, January 16, 2008 my devoted husband, sailing mate and dearest friend Alan Frederick Womack sailed away to his final port. Growing up in Croyden, England he watched the Battle of Britain from the family garden and dreamed of becoming a fighter pilot. This came true when, after his formal schooling, he was accepted in the Royal Navy, sent to train in Canada and returned to England to fly with the British Fleet Air Arm. While serving on the carrier “Searcher”, Alan was named for the Distinguished Service Cross. His greatest joy was when his parents went to Buckingham Palace to see him receive this award. A Chartered Accountant out of Edinburgh, he worked in trouble shooting and finance in England and on the continent before immigrating to Canada in the 1950s with his wife and young daughter. He worked in various places in British Columbia before coming to Calgary to join the City of Calgary Electric Department. Prior to leaving for private industry he was instrumental in developing the department into a publicly traded company, now named Enmax. He returned to the City of Calgary as Commissioner of Finance and remained there for over twenty-five years, handling the finances of a growing city before retiring. In 1986 Alan once again returned to public life, overseeing financing for the Calgary 1988 successful Olympics – a challenging and exciting position. He served on many boards particularly the Woods Home and the Pension Board. Curling at the Glencoe, golfing at Earl Grey (lastly with the Hustlers), sailing on the west coast and holidaying in California kept his life busy. Alan was predeceased by his sister Jean; brothers, John and Eric; first wife Paddy; and two infant sons. Left to remember him with love is his wife Woneetta Hamilton; her daughter Margaret Rose; and grandsons, Kyle and Kellan. He is also survived by daughters, Lynn (Calvin), and Sandy; loving granddaughter Lisa (Shawn); grandson Benjamin, Christine (Carl); great-grandchildren, Zack, Shelby and Tyson; and many nieces and nephews both in Canada and the U.K. A private Farwell was held before cremation.
