Obituary of Thomas Arthur Jones

Tom Jones of Calgary passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the age of 69 years. Born May 3, 1938, in Drumheller, AB, and raised in Rosedale with a sister and two brothers, Tom moved to Edmonton at age sixteen to begin his studies at the University of Alberta, graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Commerce. He moved to Calgary after graduation and articled with Henderson, Waines and Anderson, Chartered Accountants, earned his CA designation in 1961, and worked for Price Waterhouse and Co., finishing there as a senior auditor in 1970. He then assumed various positions at Kenting, Ltd, ending in 1986 with Executive Vice President and President. Tom worked also as an executive and consultant in Egypt and Nigeria, primarily for Trimac Limited. In 1989, he became a director of BW Technologies, and remained there, as a director and Senior Vice President and CFO, until his retirement in 2006. Tom was passionate about his family, his community, and sports. He served as chair of the Council for Canadian Unity, as a governor and then senator of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and, along with his wife, Karen, he was an early supporter of the Peter Gzowski Invitational, part of a national fundraising effort for literacy. He played football for the Mount Royal College Cougars the year the team took the National Junior title, and was invited to training camp for the Edmonton Eskimos. During the late ’60s and early ’70s, he was an enthusiastic coach for the Cooke Motors Jaguars, of the Calgary Bantam Football Association. A long-standing member of Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club, he enjoyed a considerably longer golfing season than most: he felt inclement weather kept the dabblers off the course. Tom was known among his children and grandchildren as a fine synchronized swimmer and a champion singer and story-teller. Tom was predeceased by his brother Doug; and Karen, his wife and the eternal light of his life, with whom he is now reunited. Tom is survived by his sister Linda (Steve); brother Alan (Lil); children, Dawn, Michael (Gloria), Joan (Tom), and Megan; grandchildren April, Matthew, JD, and Kate; and by numerous relatives in Alberta and in England and Wales. He is also survived by his great-granddaughter Bibianna, who will certainly miss her beloved Grampy Tom. We will all miss him.
