Obituary of Mary Susan Howard
Mary Susan (Davidson) Howard of Calgary passed away peacefully on Friday, January 4, 2008 at the age of 91 years.
Mary was born in Coleman, AB on May 8, 1916 and lived there and in Rosedale, AB before moving to Calgary. She attended Elbow Park School, Western Canada High School, Mount Royal College and graduated from the University of Alberta in 1937 with a degree in Home Economics. Upon graduation she worked as a home economist with the City of Calgary Electric System (now Enmax) where she met a young electrical engineer working with Calgary Power Ltd. (now TransAlta). After marriage Mary and Bert moved to Montreal. In 1947 they returned to Calgary where they stayed until 1960 when they returned to Montreal for another fifteen years before moving back to Calgary for good. As a young girl growing up in Elbow Park Mary received a Silver Cross medal from the Girl Guides of Canada for saving a young girl who was about to drown in the Elbow River. She was active in the Glencoe Club where she was a figure skater since its inception and had memberships in the Calgary Golf and Country Club, the Royal Montreal Golf Club, and the Beach Grove Golf Club. Mary enjoyed bridge and the activities of PEGG Wives and Pi Beta Phi Fraternity. She golfed and skied for most of her life from the days of using climbing skins on Brewster Mountain at Sunshine in the 1930s to the modern days at Sunshine, Lake Louise, Quebec, and Europe. She and Bert travelled widely and in particular enjoyed cruises to the Orient, Europe and South America. In 1997 she travelled by herself to the game parks in South Africa and two years later to the Red Sea and India. Her memory will always be cherished by her family and friends.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Noreen, Daryl and Diane, and four grandchildren, Ryan, Karen, Brianne, and Drew. She was predeceased by her husband Bert Howard; her parents, William A. Davidson and Ethel (Cogland) Davidson; and daughter-in-law Bonnie.
A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers memorial tributes may be made to the Mary (Davidson) Howard Bar None Award at the University of Alberta, Office of Alumni Affairs, Edmonton, AB T6G 2H1 or to a charity of the donor’s choice. The family’s heartfelt thanks go out to the staff of Wentworth Manor and Dr. Bob Lampard who was so kind and helpful during her stay at the Manor.
