Obituary of Donald Thomas Scobie

Donald Thomas Scobie passed away suddenly in his sleep on Sunday, December 30, 2007 at the age of 17 years while on a family ski holiday in Silver Star, BC. Donald was born in Calgary on March 8, 1990 and in 1998 he moved with his family to Doha, in the State of Qatar, where they lived for six years. While there, he studied at the Doha English Speaking School, and later at the American School of Doha where he excelled in sports and academics, winning numerous awards including the President’s Award for Academic Achievement. From his base in Doha, Donald travelled the world with his family and with school groups. Upon his return to Calgary in 2004, Donald spent one year at Elboya Junior High School, and thereafter attended grades 10 and 11 at Brentwood College in Mill Bay, BC. While at Brentwood, Donald won many awards for academic, athletic and artistic achievement, consistently making the honour roll. In September of 2007, Donald made a return to schooling in Calgary, and was attending grade 12 at Western Canada High School at the time of his passing. Donald had a great love of the outdoors, snow skiing, water skiing, white water kayaking, motor-boating, diving, squash, painting, sculpture, playing guitar, pre-2000 rock music, electronics, cooking, his friends, his dog Russell, and the family cottage in Ontario. While often mischievous, Donald displayed a quick intelligence, wit and compassion for others. He was an extremely gifted young man who had enormous potential to help make the world a better place. Donald will be greatly missed by his family and all those who knew him. Donald will be lovingly remembered by his parents Jeffrey and Margaret; his two sisters, Carolyn and Susan; grandparents, Marion Booth, and Wallace and Margery MacInnes; aunts and uncles, Kathleen and Mark Henderson; Kathleen and Ron Koper; Susan Scobie and Neill Cumberbirch; and John and Dawn MacInnes; and by his cousins, Alison and Nicholas Koper; Baine MacInnes; and Michael, Graham and Sarah Henderson. He was predeceased by his grandfather Dr. D. H. Scobie, MD, FRCS(C) and his step-grandfather Harry Booth. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 10:30 a.m.. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
