Obituary
Obituary of Guy Anthony Rhys Davies
It is with a sense of profound loss yet relief at the end of his suffering that we announce the death of Guy Davies on December 23, 2007 at the Sarcee Hospice.
Guy was the beloved son of Maureen and Graham Davies of Calgary. He is remembered by his brother Michael of Calgary and partner Mandy; sister Andrea and her husband Michael Snadden of California; his wife Laura, young son Rhys and step-daughters Rebecca and Tiffany; his teenage children Danielle and Anthony and their mother Susan (Morrison); by Yee Ping (Chau), and many relatives in Australia. Guy also is fondly remembered by his close lifelong friend Doug Fox.
Guy was a victim of the blood transfusion disaster in Canada. During his surgery after a car accident in Calgary in August 1985, he received extensive blood transfusions. Five years later, in response to continuing ill health, Guy was tested and found positive for HIV. Some time later, he was found to have also contracted the Hepatitis C virus from the transfusions. At the time, Guy was a student in electronics at SAIT, and married to Susan. To everyone’s relief, as we all began to learn about HIV and AIDS, Susan and their children were found not to be infected. As his health continued to decline, Guy was forced to withdraw from SAIT, beginning nearly seventeen years of cycles of suffering through medical and emotional crises and some periods of happiness, the latter often focused around his children and his interest in music, computers and fishing. His later years included many hospitalizations, including over five weeks of intensive care in early 2006. As his illness progressed, Guy spent extended time in residence at Beswick House, but for the last eighteen months he was cared for in his parent’s home. His last days were spent peacefully in Sarcee Hospice.
We wish to thank the doctors, nurses and support staff of Southern Alberta Clinic for many years of support and care for Guy, including medical specialists associated with SAC, particularly Drs. Friedland, LaBrie, Powers, and Myers. We extend out thanks to the administrators, staff and residents of Beswick House for their support and friendship for Guy through many highs and lows, and to the nurses and staff of the Calgary Health Region Palliative Care and Home Care programs, and particularly Pat Stewart, who attended Guy at his parent’s home over the last year. Finally, we express our sincerest thanks to the doctors, nurses and support staff at the Sarcee Hospice for their care in providing comfort and pain relief for Guy in his final days.
