Obituary of John Johnson
Dad passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at the age of 90 years. Born in Red Deer, AB on June 13, 1917, “Oscar” grew up among his Icelandic kinsman in Markerville, AB, before moving to Calgary where he spent most of his life. Before World War II he worked as an orderly at the Holy Cross Hospital, as well as performing commercials on the radio. He was a talented musician and singer who played the guitar by ear, providing his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren wonderful entertainment as they grew up. “Johnnie” enlisted with the Canadian Armed forces in April of 1942, and was stationed overseas with the Calgary Highlanders. While in Birmingham, England he met and married his partner of 63 years, Marjorie. He joined his new wife and infant son in Calgary just before Christmas in 1945. “Dad” teased five children of his own, and hundreds of others while working as a caretaker for the Calgary School Board. In 1978, after thirty years of kidding around, “Mr. Johnson” retired. This allowed him to spend time in his garden and tend to his yard.
“Dad” will be greatly missed by John, Janice (Dave), Beverley (Leo), Bruce (Robert), and Patricia (Wayne); as well as his twelve grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and his loving sister Joyce (Pete) Barnes. John was pre-deceased by his loving wife Marjorie, as well as his grandson Darcy, and son-in-law Dennis.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, P. O. Box 52051 Edmonton Trail NE Calgary, AB T2E 8K9.
