Obituary of Giovina Santarelli
Giovina Santarelli of Calgary passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at the age of 103 years.
Giovina was a remarkable lady of exceptional quality and beauty. When war broke out in Europe, the horizon didn’t look very bright. With her husband in North Africa War Theatre (Sahara Desert), she was left alone with four frightened children of ages five, eight, eleven, and thirteen. Soon, they had to evacuate their home in the city of Chieti, Italy. She had no time for hesitation. Summoning her strength, audacity and good will, she marched forth as Sergeant, ahead of the youngest working squad in the farm fields and achieved great recognition from other working groups. When the War had finally ended, the family was reunited, but hard times were still there. She continually sacrificed herself so her family could be comfortable.
Dearest Giovina, we salute you with dignity and respect. You have paved the rough and blessed road and have done so much for all of us younger, who came later. We feel proud to follow in your foot steps and keep the traditions going that were so important to you.
With honour, we will always remember the IRON LADY with that special, unforgettable smile that has touched our lives forever. We love you Giovina.
Giovina will be sadly missed by her family Tony, her only son; daughters, Rose and husband Rinaldo Antenucci, Yolanda and husband Thomas Scurti and Maria Memme; nine grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Giovani and son-in-law Dominic Memme.
