Obituary of Ranjit Singh Dhaliwal

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Dr. Ranjit Singh Dhaliwal beloved husband of Gurdev Kaur Dhaliwal. Ranjit was the adored father of Gurminder and his wife Rupinder and proud grandfather of Chandan and Tejas. Ranjit was the dear brother of Nihal, Jasmel, Pritam (all residing in India) and Amarjit (Winnipeg). Ranjit was born and raised in Bilaspur, Punjab. He began his studies at Government College in Ludhiana, India. Then he started teaching at Guru Nanak Engineering College in Ludhiana, India. After completing his doctorate in mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur), Ranjit began teaching at the Indian Institute of Technology (New Delhi). Ranjit immigrated to Canada in 1966 and joined the University of Calgary’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics. During his long and distinguished career at the University of Calgary Ranjit made contributions to his profession through numerous publications in the field of applied mathematics. Ranjit retired as Professor Emeritis in 1995 but his commitment and dedication to his profession continued long after his retirement. It was his involvement in the community where Ranjit made numerous life long friends. He was a founding member of the Sikh Society of Calgary and the Sikh Business and Professional Club of Calgary. Ranjit gave generously both his time and talents that made a significant impact on the Sikh community in Calgary. Most recently Ranjit was on the Board of Trustees of the newly formed Khalsa School Calgary. During his life, Ranjit helped raise funds for many worthy causes throughout the community. He will be remembered by his family, friends, colleagues and students for his kindness and generosity. We will all miss the sound advice and direction that he provided to all who knew him. We are all better people today because of you Dad! Funeral Services will be held at the Eastside Memorial Chapel (5388 Memorial Drive, N.E.) on Sunday, October 14, 2007 at 1:00 PM followed by a Bhog Ceremony at the Guru Nanak Sikh Centre (81st Street and Old Banff Coach Road, S.W.)
