David McCullough

Obituary of David Michael McCullough

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of Dave McCullough, beloved husband of Ellie. Dave passed away suddenly on Sunday, September 30, 2007 at the age of 60 years. Dave was born on February 8, 1947 in Barrow-In-Furness, England to Mary Cringle and Tom McCullough. One of his many pleasures growing up in Barrow was football (soccer), which he participated in as both a player and dedicated fan. After completing his formal education in electrical engineering, he worked abroad for several years before immigrating to Canada (Halifax, Nova Scotia) in 1975. His work as a marine engineer with Canmar/Dome Petroleum brought him to Calgary in 1979, where he and his family reside to this day. After taking early retirement at the age of 50, Dave began doing contract work with a variety of oil companies. Incredibly well-respected in his field, his professional expertise took him all around the world including to what became one of his favourite cities, New Orleans, Louisiana. His passion extended to sports, history, politics, music, wine, old movies, stamp collecting and most of all, his family – who provided him with several hockey games and dance recitals to enjoy over the years. An avid participant in his community, Dave volunteered for a number of causes and organizations including the Lake Bonavista Community Association (Ice Sports Director, Hockey Director) and the Bilingual School Parent Council. Dave told great stories, loved a good laugh and was known for his extraordinary generosity, which he presented at every opportunity. A devoted husband, doting father and loyal friend, Dave’s passing leaves a painful void to all who knew him. Besides his loving wife Ellie, Dave will be greatly missed by his daughter Jane (Jason Lewis), son Gordon, brothers Jack and George (Val), sisters Anne and Clare as well as many nieces, nephews, colleagues and friends. He was predeceased by three of his brothers – Bill, Thom and Vince.
