William J. (Bill) McEwan, surrounded by his forever loving family, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 24, 2007. Bill was born in Vancouver, BC to parents William Whyte McEwan, a highlander who served for Canada in the first and second World Wars, and Louise Emelia McEwan, daughter of Icelandic immigrants. Bill’s extraordinary career began in 1957 in Vancouver as the Lower Mainland sales representative for Canadian Forest Products. He later rose up the ranks to General Manager – Prairies Division. Bill made a tremendous mark on the Calgary community. He served as President of the Calgary Opera Society, VP and Governor of the Calgary Philharmonic Society, President of the Professional Opera Companies of Canada, member of the building materials sector of the Metric Commission of Canada, Senator of the Calgary Zoo, Board of the Conservative Party Constituency Association, Chairman of the 75th Scouts Canada group, board member on the Calgary bid for the 1972 Winter Olympics, an active member in the Christian Science Church, and a very proud senior pioneer member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Downtown Rotary Club of Calgary since 1968. His love for skiing along with a passion for history followed him on several trips to Europe and across North America. Bill was a gracious man and will be remembered for his tremendous skills as a story teller, for his ability to warm a room and ease all those around him. He has showed us all that we can all lead a life of authentic kindness, generosity, wisdom, and gentleness. He is missed by his loving wife of thirty-two years Teresa; his three sons, Scott, Mark, and Neil; his sister Louise; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and a wonderful circle of friends.
