Obituary of George Carolan Thomas

George Carolan (Punchy) Thomas, beloved husband of Gladys of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the age of 92 years. George was born in Bangor, Saskatchwan on February 12, 1915 and lived on many farms throughout the province until his family moved and settled on a farm outside Drumheller, Alberta. He trained with the 2nd Corps Troops, R.C.A. SC 1st during WWII. A great honour was given to him when in 1939 he was given the provincial title of Boxing Champion in his weight division. In 1942 George married his great love Gladys. He worked for Canada Post until the late 1940’s and then went on to work at Trans Canada Airlines and finally retired with Air Canada in 1976. After his retirement both he and Gladys enjoyed travelling extensively throughout the world. George was always there to lend a helping hand he volunteered many hours at the South Calgary Community Center in the 1950’s and early 1960’s, shovelling and flooding the ice for the kids after and before his varying shifts at work. He will be sadly missed. Besides his loving wife Glady’s George is also survived by his son and two daughters-in-law Blake and Julianna Thomas and Geordie Glenn all of Calgary; two grandchildren Shannon Thomas and Kelly Thomas; sister Rose Smith of Calgary; favourite nieces Dorothy Crocker and Rosina Toulson. He was predeceased by his son Brian Thomas; sisters Grace and Harriet; brothers Tommy, Arnold, Evan, Jack and his parents T.J. and Jane Thomas. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to all the staff at the Chinook Care Center and the doctors and nurses in Unit 59 at the Rockyview Hospital for all their care and compassion.
