Obituary of Sister Margaret Pilley

Sister Margaret Pilley F.C.J. (formerly Mother Aloysius) died peacefully on Sunday, September 2, 2007 at the age of 93 years. Margaret was born in Winnipeg, MB on May 12, 1914 to Edwin and Mary Pilley. The family moved to Calgary while Margaret was very young. After graduating from St. Mary’s Girls’ High School, Margaret joined the Sisters, Faithful Companions of Jesus in Brussels, Belgium on September 8, 1932. In August of 1935, she returned to the Sacred Heart Convent in Calgary and lived out her whole life here. She attended Calgary Normal School for teacher training and taught in the Calgary Catholic Schools, first at St. Mary’s and then at St. Theresa’s and St. Anne’s, until her retirement in 1977. She also studied music and continued to give piano lessons long after her retirement. She worked in Pastoral Care at Holy Cross Hospital and continued to do catechetical teaching, as well as serving in many capacities at the F.C.J. Christian Life Centre and the Sacred Heart Convent. Margaret is survived by her sister, Mrs. Mary Herbert of Vancouver, BC; her niece Maureen; her special cousins, Susan and Francis Pilley of Calgary, AB; several other nieces and nephews; her F.C.J. sisters; and many friends and former pupils. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at Sacred Heart Convent Chapel (219 – 19 Avenue S.W.) on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Convent Chapel (219 – 19 Avenue S.W.) on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
