Obituary of Margaret Huntley
Margaret Huntley passed away peacefully at the Bow View Manor in Calgary, AB on Monday, August 27, 2007. Margaret is survived (and much loved) by her three children, Patricia Dauphinee, Lloyd (Linda), Kathy Hubbard (Brad), and their families; one niece, three nephews and their families; sisters-in-law Jill Walker and Hazel Huntley; and several family/neighbourhood pets who will miss “Grandma” and the dog biscuits she always had tucked away for them. Each of Margaret’s six grandchildren (Christie, Andrew, Lee-Ann, David, Matthew and Joey) know the special place they have in her heart – Grandma longed for each of you and loves you so much.
Margaret was born in Huddersfield (Yorkshire), England, the only child of Sarah and Ernest Eastburn. During World War II Margaret served her country in Britain’s Land Army “Timber Core” Unit. During the war, she met Jack Huntley of Calgary while he was stationed in England with the South Alberta Regiment. The couple was married, and at the war’s conclusion “war bride” Margaret arrived in Calgary to begin the next chapter of her life as a loving wife and mother. This impetuous war time marriage lasted more than sixty-three years’ until Jack’s death earlier this year on April 19. Margaret and Jack remained in Calgary spending most of their years at their home on Westmount Road NW where for forty-three years; Margaret lovingly tended her beautiful flower gardens in summer, knitted away the winter months with various woolly projects for her grandchildren, and baked year round for their many visitors. Canada’s Rocky Mountains made an impression on Jack’s war bride that lasted a lifetime. Both Margaret and Jack loved picnicking and camping, and enjoyed many special holidays and weekends away in their “Scamper” trailer in the Invermere Valley with good friends and family. Margaret treasured many fond memories of the traveling she and Jack did following Jack’s retirement – cruising to Alaska, flying to England, bus trips to the Maritime Provinces and to some destinations in the US. Bow View Manor became Margaret’s home for the last few months of her life. The care and love exhibited daily by all staff at this facility was a standard of excellence that meant more to Margaret and her family than words can adequately express. Angels on earth – we are indebted to you all. Thank you.
