Obituary of Medicine Shield

Emery Reginald Medicine Shield was born June 12, 1962 at Siksika Nation. He went home peacefully to be with the Lord after a lengthy battle with cancer on Sunday, August 12, 2007 at the age of 45 years. He was raised by his grandparents Peter and Alice, and was taught the values of respecting, caring and sharing. Emery, at the time of his death, was on the Siksika Chief and Council and was serving his people to make good positive changes. Emery fulfilled his dream and became a Pastor three years ago and was ordained with the Native Ministry Association of Canada. He will be remembered for his genuine personality, humbleness, smile, sense of humour and his friendly nature. He was instrumental in bearing witness of his Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and inspiring many to fight the good fight of faith. His passion was to travel across the country into the U.S. preaching the word of God and sharing his testimony. Emery will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife of 24 years, Rhonda; children Byron (Joenie), Trina (Melvin), Shona (Jonathan), Darnell, Peter, and Adam; his adopted children, Nikki (Dewayne) Tartsah, Robin (Eric) Many Guns, Brandi (Tommy) and Mary (Drake) Right Hand, Joshua Starlight; special grandson Tayson, who brought him comfort and strength; grandchildren, Kyera, , Kaydra, Kyrie, Keyshawn; adopted grandchildren, Brianna, Nevaeh, Chloe, Parker, Carter, Colbi, Samuel, Orianna; his parents Joe and Geraldine; traditional parents, Donna and Wilton; sisters, Colleen (Thurman), Jocelyn, Raylene (Wade), Alice, Tashiro (Ray), Jolene (John), Tylan and Shelley; brothers Fredrick, Guy (Marcia), Bradford, Dallas (Gina), Aaron and Tyson Axe; adopted brothers and sisters Francine (Wendell) Calf Robe, Jason Little Light, Rosemarie (Darrell) Breaker, Darrell (Mona) McDonald, Alice Currie and family; in-laws Kenneth (Judy) Doore, Grandma Rosa Doore, brother-in-laws Dion (Shirley) and Jason (Louise) Doore; aunties Ruby Doore, Frances Many Bears, Veronica Old Woman, Veronica Smith, Annie (late Joe) Running Rabbit, Mary Ann Wells; uncles Clifford (Anne) Big Eye and Alex (Bernice) Hunt. He will be missed by his nieces and nephews whom he adored and cherished and his many friends whose stories can tell you of their journey and adventures. Extended family of Medicine Shield, Axe, McMaster, Good Eagle, Spring Chief, Running Rabbit, Pretty Young Man, One Gun, First Rider, Chief Body, Crow Eagle, Calf, Sun Walk, Water Chief, Black Rider, Breaker, Stud Horse, Old Woman, Yellow Fly, Solway and Hind Bull. He was predeceased by sisters Joely (Ashley), Cherrie-Lynn; brothers Patrick and Ellie Little Chief; grandchild Melvin Jr.; grandparents Peter (Alice) Axe; aunties and uncles Edward (Shoeshine) Axe, Clement (Vannie) McMaster, George (Edith) Medicine Shield, Christine (Weyman) McMaster, Rosie (Adam) Solway, Jane and Lucy Medicine Shield. People are welcome to join the family at the residence of Rhonda Medicine Shield on Sunday, August 19, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. for a church service dedicated to Emery. Wake Service will be held at the Residence of Emery and Rhonda Medicine Shield, Siksika Nation on Monday, August 20, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at the Residence of Emery and Rhonda Medicine Shield, Siksika Nation on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Paul Little Walker Cemetery. If friends so desire donations may be made to the “Emery Medicine Shield Fund” with proceeds to go to the Strathmore Hospital and Church (Box 1313 Siksika, AB T0J 3W0). The family would like to thank all the people who offered words of encouragement, support and prayer.
