Eric Dobbs

Obituary of Eric Herbert Dobbs

Dr. Eric Dobbs passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday morning, August 9, 2007 at 85 years of age. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Kathleen; his children Susan Perrett (Bob) of York, PA, Nancy Follett (Ian) of Calgary; and by his grandsons BJ and Kyle Perrett of San Francisco. He graduated with his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1944, practiced for five years at the TB Sanatorium in Ninette, MB, then completed his specialized training in anaesthesiology at the University Hospital in Edmonton and joined the Calgary General Hospital in 1956, becoming the Chief of Staff and Chief Anaesthetist. But, he called himself a “gas passer”. He always got called for the difficult cases, which included a lion with an abscessed tooth. In 1972 he joined the Palliser Square Surgical Suite and retired in 1986. He went curling every Sunday morning as part of a group calling itself the Sinners. He also skipped his medical team to four consecutive Interprovincial Medical Curling Championships. He loved to play golf. He said he did not necessarily hit the longest ball but it was always straight. Eric was also a prolific stained glass fabricator, with family and friends all recipients of his work. He delighted in recounting the tales of his and Kay’s four back country trips on horseback into the Rockies. He was friendly to all and devoted to his wife. Eric’s wish was that no service be held.
