Anthony Fanous

Obituary of Anthony Fanous

Anthony (Tony) Fanous of Calgary passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at the age of 82 years. Tony was born in November 1924 in Alexandria, Egypt, the third of four children. He served with the Greek division of the British Air Force and trained in South Africa, serving in WWII. In spite of his short time in the Middle East, Tony spoke fondly of the memories and adventures that went with his time there. Tony lived most of his life in Montreal, successfully selling real estate to friends and clients of diverse ethnic backgrounds. He moved to Calgary ten years ago to be with his family and formed many new friendships here. He was a charismatic individual that was well-liked by many people. Tony’s struggle with cancer in the last year of his life transformed him and gave him a new appreciation for life with an enduring hope that he would be well again. During the last months of his life he became aware of his need for God and his need for reconciliation with his sister. In his final days he discovered the great comfort of his Creator and was gently ushered into His presence, surrounded by his family who truly loved him. Tony is lovingly remembered by his sister Anna; his nieces, Mary, Sophia, Cathy (Tony), Rosemary, Miriam (Gabe), and Aimee; and his nephews, Alfonse, Camil, Matthew, and Philip. Sincere thanks and appreciation is extended to the staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre for their care and compassion, to Dr. Kozak for his compassionate kindness, Dr. Davies, and Dr. Dickenson as well as the staff at the Colonel Belcher (Vimy) and the staff at Cedars Villa (Willow). In addition, the family expresses their most sincere thanks to Father Demetrios Rougas and Pastor Ray Matheson for their spiritual care and encouragement in Tony’s life during his final months. Tony’s departing wishes were to be cremated. His family will scatter his ashes at a later date in the scattering garden at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
