Obituary of Margaret Blanche Brown

It is with great sadness that we announce that our dear Margaret Blanche Brown passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at the age of 67 years. She is survived by her husband of forty-four years, Phil; her son and daughter-in-law Ian and Jodie; her daughter and son-in-law Sheila and Paul; two grandchildren Kyle and Emily; as well as her brother and sister-in-law Bill and Angela. Margaret was born in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, she attended the Girls High School and then Liverpool University, graduating with a BA (Hons.) in Geography in 1961. She received her teaching certificate in 1962 and then married Phil, joining him in Toronto where she taught for a year at Branksome Hall. In 1963, Margaret and Phil moved to Ponca City, OK, where both children were born, before moving to Calgary in 1968. From 1975 to 1979 she was employed in the Gallagher Library at the University of Calgary, before joining the Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas Company where she became an Information Specialist in their library. This continued after the takeover by Dome Petroleum and for a short time following their acquisition by Amoco. Margaret then excelled as a consultant for several oil companies before settling, more-or-less full time, with Petro-Canada until her retirement in 1998. An avid gardener, Margaret is well-known in the Calgary horticultural field, having contributed many articles to the CHS monthly magazine, acted as one of the authors of “The Calgary Gardner” (1996) and conducted several courses for the CHS. Her comments, suggestions and enthusiasm will be missed. Margaret was also active in the art world, producing numerous watercolours that cover the walls of her home and those of her children. She and Phil were for many years keen participants in Scottish Country Dancing and more recently she was very involved with several book clubs.
