Obituary of Florence Walker

Florence Josephine (nee Bigelow) of Crossfield, AB, passed away peacefully into God’s hands at the age of 73 on April 9, 2007 after a lengthy hospitalization at the Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) and Didsbury Hospital. Born on June 4, 1933 in Calgary, AB, the tenth of thirteen children of Edvard and Emma Bigelow, Florence spent her childhood in Sundre, AB and in Crossfield, AB for the remainder of her life. Florence enjoyed long telephone conversations, playing cards–especially bridge at the Golden Key Club and recording history, whether it be by taking record amounts of photographs everywhere she went, writing historical articles for books or collecting antiques. The last few months of Mom’s life were very hard and trying, but she was tough and seemed to overcome each new hurdle as it came along. The hardest part for her during this time was not being able to speak. For those who knew Mom – you know what we mean! Most of all, Mom was very passionate and devoted to her family and the community of Crossfield. She will be sorely missed by her sons, Stuart (Aline) of Balzac, AB and Stan of Crossfield, AB, and her grandchildren, Victoria, Jason, Janlynn, Jessica and Kess-Sandra. Florence was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1998 and son Randy in 2000; as well as brothers Archie, Bill, Walter, Sydney and Leslie and her parents Emma and Ed Bigelow. She will be missed by her surviving brothers and sisters Ernest, Richard (Julie), Gordon (Rose), Roy (Val), Violet Dolphin, Alice Broadhurst and Eva (Frank) Jenish and numerous nieces and nephews. Thank you to Dr. Heine for his care, the nurses at PLC Unit 42, especially Kate and Kristy, as well as all the other numerous doctors, nurses and healthcare providers who came into Mom’s life during these last few months.
