Obituary of Charles Robert John Smith

It is with great sorrow that the family of Charles Robert John Smith (Smitty) announce he has lost his year long battle with cancer early Sunday morning, April 8, 2007 at the age of 80 years. Smitty slipped away peacefully with his wife of fifty-three years, Irene, at his side. He leaves to mourn his passing, along with Irene, his daughters Claire and her husband Kevin MacDougall, Barbara and her husband Trevor Scott; his three grandchildren, Ian and Lindsey MacDougall and Taylor Scott, who will miss their Grandpa dearly. Smitty will also be missed by his many relatives and friends he has made over his lifetime. Smitty is also survived by his three sisters, Eva, Grace and Connie. He was predeceased by his son Wesley in September of 1979, his brother Bud, and sisters Midge, Ross and Millie. Smitty was born October 17, 1926 in Treesbank, MB to Charles Robert and Hariet Smith. He was a registered psychiatric nurse and took his training in Brandon, MB. Smitty had an adventurous twenty-seven year career in the Canadian Armed Forces and was very proud of his Veteran status. He then spent the next fifteen years working at Headingly Jail minimum security facility in Winnipeg on the Medical Ward. Smitty and Irene retired to Cochrane in 1991 and spent their retirement years enjoying life in Alberta with their families.
