Obituary of Sydney Roy Upton

Mr. Sydney “Roy” Upton, beloved husband of Mrs. Marguerite Upton of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at the age of 87 years. Born on August 28, 1919 in the Sub-district of Hampstead, County of London, England, to Sgt. Sudney E. Upton and Gertrude May (Hobson) Upton. He was raised and schooled in Lethbridge, AB. Roy joined the Canadian Army (active) in 1940. He served in Canada, United Kingdom and Continental Europe until 1945. After the war, Roy worked in sales for the Mid-West Paper in Lethbridge, Edmonton, Regina and Calgary for several years. When he retired, he worked as a volunteer driver for Meals-On-Wheels. Roy loved camping, hiking, mountain climbing, scuba diving and skin diving. He taught scuba and skin diving at the Regina Y.M.C.A. He also instructed the Senior Men’s Exercise program at the South Calgary Y.M.C.A. in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Roy is survived by his loving wife, Marguerite; daughters, Chris (Carl) Volk and Frances Machuk of Regina, SK; his son Ronald of Surrey, BC; his sister Doreen Attrell of Nanaimo, BC; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Audrey of Victoria, BC, son Stephen and son-in-law Brian Machuk of Regina, SK.
