Obituary of Esther Newsome

Esther Newsome, beloved wife of Roland Newsome passed away peacefully early in the morning of Saturday March 24, 2007 at the age of 86 years. Esther was born in Edmonton and attended Garneau Public and high school. She enjoyed a wonderful childhood with sisters Ruth and Gloria. In grade eight she and fifteen other girls started a club called Tana-ma-ku and continued on a lifetime of friendship. At the age of twenty-one she met the love of her life Roland and married in Halifax in 1942 when he was granted shore leave during the war. She enjoyed a successful modeling career for some time, and became a well respected teacher in the industry. She was also an avid golfer, and a very involved member at Earl Grey Golf and Country Club. She enjoyed her year as the ladies club president and thoroughly enjoyed modeling in the annual ladies fashion show. She was very proud of her hole in one. In 2003 she and Roly moved from their Elboya home to Garrison Woods Manor. Esther and Roly have been role models for their family in many respects but especially in their unconditional devotion to each other over 65 years of marriage. Esther will be fondly remembered as a loving and devoted wife, wonderful mother, caring grandmother and friend to many. Her kindness, thoughtfulness and sense of humour will be missed by everyone who was fortunate to have known her. Esther will be lovingly remembered by her husband Roland, her two sons Donald and David and their wives Helen and Madeline. Esther will be missed by her sister Ruth of Vancouver. Esther was a much loved grandmother to her six grandchildren, Jennifer (Steve), Sarah (Doug), Andrew (Laura), Christopher (Lisa), Nicky (Dave) and Jillian, two great grandchildren Spencer and Paige, and two step-great grandchildren Austin and Josie.
