Obituary of John Brock Dundas

Brock Dundas, beloved husband of Lucille Dundas, of Calgary, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Foothills Medical Centre, following an acute illness on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at the age of 73 years. Brock was born in Toronto, and moved with his family to Montreal in 1944 and attended both Lower Canada College and McGill University, obtaining a B.Sc. in 1952. He then entered the Faculty of Medicine, obtaining his M.D., C.M. in 1959. Brock trained in Paediatrics at the Montreal General Hospital, the Montreal Children’s Hospital, and the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London England, obtaining his F.R.C.P (C) in 1965. Following six years of practice in Montreal, Brock moved his family to Calgary to take a position with The Calgary Associate Clinic, which he retained for twenty-nine years, retiring in 2000. Brock was passionate about medicine and very active in medical affairs. He served as President of Staff, Alberta Children’s Hospital for three years during its transition from Foothills Hospital to its new site on Richmond Road. Brock also served as Head of Paediatrics at Holy Cross Hospital. He was instrumental in the development of Palliative Care in Calgary, and was primarily responsible for the establishment of Rosedale House, the first Hospice in Calgary. Brock served as Medical Director of the Calgary Home Care Program from 1973 to 1996, and through it introduced palliative home care in Calgary. Brock also served as President of the Calgary Regional Staff Association from 1998 to 2002. In 2003, he was made an honorary member of the Canadian Medical Association and in 2005, Brock was made a member emeritus of the Alberta Medical Association and voted one of the 100 Physicians of the Century in Alberta. Brock maintained an active interest in community, serving on the Board of Directors of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School from 1976-1986, the last two years as Chairman. Brock then turned his attention to another educational project, serving on the Board of The Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation for thirteen years including a term as Chairman from 1992-1994. Brock is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife and best friend of forty-six years, Lucille; his five children, Lawrence (Deb Davidson), John (Tina), David (Kate Acs), Michael (Wendy McDonald), and Kathryn (Peter Jekill); his grandchildren, Daniel and Jeffrey Davidson, Gray and Emily Dundas, Madison Dundas, Nicolas, Brock, Trinity, Alexus and Charlotte Jekill as well as his brother Norman.
