Obituary of Margaret Weir Craig Briggs

Margaret Briggs has passed away peacefully in her 91st year, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s, on Friday March 9th, 2007. After a full and happy life, Margaret passed away at the Extendicare Nursing Home in Moose Jaw, SK, where in May 2003, she had taken up residence, together with her loving husband George, after being long time residents of Calgary, AB. Margaret was born in Expanse, Saskatchewan, on May 9, 1916. She attended Expanse Public and High Schools, graduating from grade twelve in June, 1936. Margaret worked at home until 1940 when she left to attend Business College at Moose Jaw Technical School. In those days, young people started in office work by working for the experience, without pay. She worked in Moose Jaw at Osborne’s Cleaners for two years and at Joyner’s Shoe Department for nearly four years. Margaret moved to Calgary in November 1948, and worked for Spence’s Shoes and Ingram’s Shoes. She eventually went back to office work; at Shores Credit Jewelers as Credit Manager, traveling to all Shores jewelry stores in Western Canada, verifying credit and collections. She started working for Canadian Prospect Oil and Gas Ltd. in 1955, which eventually became Canadian Export Oil and Gas Ltd, later renamed Placer CEGO Petroleum Ltd, from where she retired in 1983. Margaret had a great passion for gardening, curling, golfing, dancing and entertaining, all of which she enjoyed to the fullest along with her husband George whom she married on August 23, 1969 in Calgary. She was an active member of the Calgary North Hill Curling Club, Kensington Branch 264 of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Calgary Elks Lodge and Golf club for many years. Margaret is survived by two sisters, Marion Pearson of Moose Jaw, SK, and Agnes Phillips, of Henderson, Nevada; as well as a brother Hugh Gibson (Valerie) of Mossbank SK; two step-sons, Dennis and Larry Briggs (Phyllis) of London, Ontario; two grandchildren, Julie of Calgary and Robert of London, ON; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband George, on November 22, 2003; her parents, Marion and Andrew Gibson of Mossbank SK; and two nephews, Douglas and Murray Gibson, of SK. The families of Margaret Briggs would like to extend their most sincere thank you for the dedication of the staff of Extendicare, Moose Jaw, for making the last few years of her life as pleasant as possible. Visitation for her many friends and relatives will be held at Parkview Funeral Home in Moose Jaw, SK, on Thursday March 15, 2007 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Calgary visitation will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Sunday, March 18, 2007 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells on Monday, March 19, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Queens Park Cemetery.
