Obituary of Alan William Robertson

Al Robertson of Calgary passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the age of 79 years. Al began his life-long commitment to career and family in his very early years, helping with the family groceries from the proceeds of his paper route and other odd jobs in south Calgary. Despite this, and his dedication to his studies, he also found time for sports. He played hockey for two seasons with the Calgary Buffalos, an NHL farm team (using the Saturday Evening Post for shin pads), played badminton at the Glencoe Club, worked with the Ski Patrol in Banff, and was an avid competitor in the Calgary roller-skating scene, where he met and married his first wife Norma, and also met Luella Cox, whom he would also marry more than thirty years later. Al pursued a career in accounting with Texaco, but moved in the late 1940’s, on the eve of his RIA final exams, to work in Edmonton, as a field representative with GMAC. This led to his ownership of a GM car dealership in Camrose, AB from 1961 to 1976 where he also sold farm machinery and took up “gentleman” farming with his family. During these years he was also a dedicated Rotarian, coached minor league and senior hockey, played golf, served as Camrose City Alderman, and was president of his regional Conservative constituency. After Norma’s passing in 1975 from a long battle with cancer, Al returned to Calgary with the three children. He spent several years in the restaurant business, and later worked as a realtor with Re-Max. During these years he also rekindled his friendship with Lu Cox, whom he married in 1988. In recent years Al returned to accounting, and was Accountant and Business Manager for several years at DeMille Technical books, and later provided private accounting services to a number of firms. Al is lovingly remembered by his daughter Patti (Peter) Tahmazian; sons, Art and Bill; sister Dorothy (White) Garries; wife Luella Cox; and two grandsons, Alan Robertson and Cameron Tahmazian. He was predeceased by first wife Norma in 1975. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. Alan will be interred with Norma in Camrose, AB at a later date.
