Obituary of Nina Savels

On Tuesday February 27, 2007, after a full and joyful life, Nina passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord and Saviour surrounded by her loving family. Nina was born in Riga, Latvija on June 1, 1919 and came to Canada in 1947. She was the oldest of five children and helped to raise her brothers and sister before leaving Latvija. Nina worked in Germany as an interpreter due to her ability to speak five languages. Along side her husband she came to Canada settling finally in Alberta and Calgary. Upon arrival in Canada Nina was responsible to sponsor many doctors and friends to come from Latvija, helping them get established in Canada. Nina studied and became a nurse for many years in Gleichen, AB, for the Salvation Army Eventide Home, and she also sang in many choirs throughout the area. Nina came to Calgary in 1957 and worked along side her husband in their decorating business until they retired in 1985. She enjoyed her walks and spending time with her family celebrating namesdays, birthdays and all extended family gatherings. She was an avid cross-stitcher and gave away many of her Latvian designed pillows to friends and loved ones. Nina was a terrific cook and taught many friends how to make bacon buns? and many other Latvian dishes. Nina was a kind, caring, gentle, generous and loving mom and grandma who always thought of others before herself. She left us a legacy of giving and caring for others. Nina is survived by her husband of sixty-two years, Leon, who was her childhood sweetheart; son Teodors (Vilma) Berzins; daughter Silvija; son Robert (Evelyn); grandsons Christopher and Andrew; and brothers Voldis, Nick, Leo and Mihail.
