Obituary of Henry Neubauer
Henry (Hank) Neubauer of Calgary passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at the age of 100 years.
Mr. Neubauer was born in Odessa Russia on January 21, 1907; and the family immigrated to Canada in 1910 when Henry was three years old. The family settled in Irvine Alberta where the homestead is still farmed by his nephew Roy Neubauer. Henry held many jobs including working as a farm hand to crew chief foreman building grain elevators prior to going overseas during World War II with the Canadian Army. In 1946 Henry came to Beiseker Alberta to sell grain for the Alberta Pacific Grain Company. In Beiseker Henry met and married Barbara Hagel, only child of Jake Hagel. The Neubauers were married on Boxing Day in 1947, and a baby daughter Lois was born on December 13, 1948. Henry and Barbara moved to Calgary in 1966 and Henry continued to work several more years buying grain for Federal Grain in Balzac Alberta before retiring in 1972. Following a long illness Barbara passed away in Calgary on December 8, 1972. Henry accredited his longevity to keeping physically and mentally active throughout his life with baseball, curling, swimming, dancing, floor curling and walking. He enjoyed frequent travel to Hawaii, Reno and Las Vegas. Henry was a thirty-three year Life Time Member of the Happy Solos Dance Club now known as The Saturday Night Dance Club. He was also a member of the 264 Kensington Legion and was a lifetime member of the Alberta Motor Association until his ninety-ninth birthday when he gave up driving the family car.
Henry is survived by his long time companion Lucille Gasior; his daughter Lois Decker and Winston Karel of Calgary; two nieces, Marilyn (Norman) Tolk of Nashville, TN; and Alice Baker of Calgary; four nephews, Roy (Leona), Barry (Janet), George and Douglas (Gayle Denys) Neubauer; along with two sisters-in-law Ella and Peggy Neubauer all of Medicine Hat.
