Obituary of Muriel Evelyn Jones

Muriel Evelyn (Molly) Jones, of Cochrane, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2007, at home at the age of 87 years. Muriel was born on November 6, 1919, in Calgary, AB, the daughter of Gilbert Owen Jones and Evelyn Grace Jones (nee Fairclough), both of whom had come from Bristol, England. Dean Paget introduced them and later married them in the cathedral. Muriel joined Mobil Oil Canada Ltd. as a Stenographer in October 1948; she held a variety of assignments, mainly in the Controller’s Department, and attained the position of Accountant in 1956. In 1959, Muriel was appointed secretary to the President. She held that position until 1978 when she was appointed Administrative Assistant to the President; she served in that capacity until retirement in 1980. “She was as fine a lady as there ever was” according to Arne Nielsen, former president of Mobil Oil Canada. When he was named Honorary Consul of Denmark, Muriel did all of the administrative work for that as well. Muriel and her sister Eileen enjoyed extensive travelling on their holidays and saw much of the world. The sisters had a great love and compassion for animals, and were active supporters of the S.P.C.A. as well as humane societies in Cochrane, throughout Canada and internationally. Of particular interest was S.P.A.N.A. for the treatment of abused horses and donkeys in North Africa and worldwide. They also supported the Canadian Bible Society. Muriel was a member of the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer for most of her life and also helped out at the Mission Church of St. George’s in Parkview, AB. Upon moving to Cochrane in 1977, she attended All Saints Anglican Church for two years, and subsequently St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Calgary. Molly clearly demonstrated her faith in her caring for her father and sister in their later years. Muriel is survived by her sister-in-law Mrs. Elizabeth Jones of Calgary; nephew Reginald Gordon Jones; niece Mrs. Diane Walford; three great-nieces and one great-nephew, all of whom live in Eastern Canada. Muriel was predeceased by her parents; three sisters, Eileen, Dorothy and Betty; and brother Frederick Owen Jones. Funeral Services will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church (1407 – 7 Avenue N.W.) on Saturday, February 3, 2007, at 1:00 p.m., with the Rev. Jagdutt Singh, Presider. Graveside Service to follow at Cochrane Cemetery. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com .
