Obituary of Stack McColough

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved “Aunty Kay” on January 23, 2007. She died peacefully at home at the age of 89 years. Affectionately known as “Katie” to friends and family, she was a classic. She was a lady of accomplishments – intelligent, faithful, athletic, fashionable, feisty, politically in tune, classy in every respect, and a professional in every sense of the word. Kay was born in Vulcan, Alberta, on January 11, 1918. As a young woman she attended St. Mary’s Girls School, in Calgary, and excelled in her academics and music. She loved the outdoors and mastered tennis, golf and skiing. Her study of Dentistry at Dalhousie University was interrupted for three years when she became involved in the war effort. During her summers she returned to work at Chateau Lake Louise, where she made lifelong friendships. She loved Canada and its great history, its people and its culture. She loved to spend time with family and friends and share her passion for life. Kay was never afraid to ask a question and was relentless in getting the answer. Katie loved to play bridge and visit with friends at the Calgary Golf and Country Club. She was a devout Catholic and a caring and compassionate woman. Her self confidence, energy and strong faith in God, enabled her to always move forward. Known to many as Dr. Stack, she established wonderful relationships with her patients spanning almost 50 years. She never hesitated to serve those in need and those who couldn’t afford dental services, be it at home or as far away as Haiti. Kay was the only woman in her graduating class and one of the first female dentists in Calgary. She was affectionately referred to as “one of the boys” by her fellow professionals. Kay was predeceased by her husband, John Reginald McColough, her parents, Luke and Mary Clare Stack, her infant brother, Luke Stack, her brother, Louis Stack, and her sister-in-law, Peggy Stack. She is survived by her brother, Edward Daniel (Joan) Stack, of Edmonton; her cousin, Polly Churchill, of Boston; as well as her fifteen nieces and nephews, Sister Mary Clare Stack, Daniel Stack, Ted (Kerry) Stack, Michael (Nadine) Stack, Peter (Monica) Stack, Margie (Brian) Gavriloff, Joanne (Randy) Wachowicz, Philip (Clara Cerminara) Stack, Paul (Sarah) Stack, Barry (Myrna-Lea) Stack, Carlyn (Jim) Dodge, Frank (Pam Lougheed) Stack, Luke (Anne) Stack, Kathy Stack-Merten, and Louis (Margaret) Stack. Kay took great interest and delight in her thirty-six great nieces and nephews, and they loved her dearly. Kay was a shining light to everyone she knew and she will be forever loved and missed.
