Norma Mastalir

Obituary of Norma Jean Mastalir

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Norma Jean Mastalir, dearly beloved wife of Paul Mastalir, and mother of Norman (Alice) Mastalir and Cindy (Peter) Findlay, on January 16, 2007, at the age of 70 years. Norma was born in Calgary on April 24, 1936. She graduated from Central Memorial High School; soon after that she met Paul, and they started their life together. In 1967 Norma went to work for the Calgary Board of Education, where she worked for twenty years, starting at Harold Panabaker and retiring from Viscount Bennett. Norma was a generous and kind hearted woman who was devoted to sharing her life with her grandchildren, Devin (Katie), Melissa, Sarah, and Jason. Nana never missed a hockey game, swim meet, cycling or bobsled race that her grandchildren were involved in; she was very proud of their accomplishments. Norma also had a passion for gardening, and was eager to share her knowledge, as well as her well-tended plants, with anyone who was starting a garden of their own. Many of Norma’s plants are found around Calgary, and they will serve as wonderful reminders to many people of her kind and generous ways. Norma and Paul recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, which was a testament to how deeply they loved each other. Besides her loving husband, children, and grandchildren, Norma will also be missed by her brothers, Bruce (Winona) Chalmers, Dale (Cathy) Chalmers; sister, Diane (Wilf) Reid; as well as her nieces and nephews, Lisa (Rod), Greg (Naomi), Tony (Ilsen), Christine (Yule), Zachary, Joshua, and Crystal.
