Obituary of Albert Dominic Sparrow

Dr. Albert Dominic (Bert) Sparrow, beloved husband of Myleen Sparrow of Calgary, passed away on Thursday January 11, 2007, at the age of 85 years. Bert was born and raised in Calgary. He served as a Captain in the Dental Corps of the Canadian Army during WW II. He attended the University of Alberta and subsequently graduated in Dentistry from the University of Toronto in 1945 and later received a Fellowship to the Mayo Clinic where he earned a Master of Science in Dentistry from the University of Minnesota. Bert was a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, a Life Member of the Canadian Dental Association and served as President of the Calgary and District Dental Society, President of the Alberta Dental Association and later as President of the Alberta Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons for five years. He also served as a member of the Part-time Academic Staff in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Alberta for thirteen years. A descendent of two prominent Calgary pioneer families, Bert felt it was important to give back to the community and did so by volunteering for many years as a member of the Kinsmen Club of Calgary where he served a term as President and also served as an Associate Director of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede on the Downtown Attractions Committee. Bert was an athlete and played for the Calgary Stampeders in 1946 and was a long time supporter of the Calgary Flames. Never one to sit still, Bert’s fondness for his heritage led him to ranching and raising cattle in his “spare time”. His love for the outdoors was only exceeded by his love for his family for whom there was no limit. His genuine concern for others, keen sense of humour and his integrity endeared him to all who knew him. Bert is lovingly remembered by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of sixty-one years Myleen; his two sons and daughter-in-law, Bernard and Mairi and Craig as well as six grandchildren Lynn, David, Tera, Barbara, Melissa and Sarah.
