Obituary of John Hunt
J.V. “Curly” Hunt passed away on December 20, 2006 at the age of 87 years. Curly was predeceased by his wife, Jeanne, on January 2, 2002. He is survived by his children, Barb Carter, Fred Hunt (Patti), Laurie Finney (Doug), Jack Hunt (Debbie), Patti Hunt (Mark Perron), and Gordon Hunt, as well as twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Hockey was a major part of Curly’s early years. He played for the Gonzaga University Bulldogs, the Kimberly Dynamiters, and during the war, the Airforce. While playing hockey for the Airforce in Lethbridge, in 1944, he met and married Jeanne. Curly gave up an NHL career to move to Calgary where he made a name for himself in Real Estate. He was one of the original members of the MLS Million Dollar Club. He was president of Hunt Real Estate, which he established in the 1950’s, and he co-owned Quigley Hunt Insurance with partner, Jack Quigley. Curly, an avid sportsman, was one of the founding members of the Calgary Booster Club. He served as President of the Booster Club in 1957/58, and was honoured for his contribution during the 50th Anniversary of the Club in 2003. Curly was a diehard supporter of the Calgary Stampeders Football Club – he was on the Grey Cup train of 1948, and held season tickets from the Stampeders days in Mewata Stadium all the way through to 2006. Curly was a devoted fan of the “ponies,” and spent many an afternoon with family and friends at the racetrack at Stampede Park. Curly was also a member of the Petroleum Club and the Calgary Glencoe Club.
