Obituary of David Gibson
David Gibson, wise and generous husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2006 at the age of 80 years.
David grew up in Toronto and joined the army in 1944. After the war, he earned a PhD in psychology at the University of Toronto. He became chief psychologist at the hospital in Smith Falls, Ontario, where he met and married nurse Sudbury in 1961. David, Kay and baby Martha then settled in Calgary where he taught at the University of Calgary for almost twenty-five years. Always dedicated to his profession and his community, he co-founded and directed the Vocational Research & Rehabilitation Institute (VRRI). David was an expert in developmental disabilities and authored several books on the subject, including “Down’s Syndrome”. He was editor of the Canadian Psychological Review from 1969 to 1979, and president of the Canadian Psychological Association from 1973 to 1974. David became a Professor Emeritus in 1988.
David is survived by Kathleen, his wife of forty-five years; his five children Martha, Jen, Judy, Peter and John; and by his four grandchildren Jenna, Kyle, Fletcher and Megan.
