Obituary of Dorothy Duncan

Dorothy Duncan, beloved wife of Walter E. Duncan, of Calgary, passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital on Tuesday, December 05, 2006 at the age of 83 years. Dorothy was born in Rivers, Manitoba, on December 14, 1922. She grew up on a farm and at the outbreak of the war, began nurse’s training at Winnipeg, and later was a Medical Librarian in Brandon. She married Walter Duncan in 1947, and remained in Manitoba until 1955. They came to Vermillion, Alberta, where Dorothy worked as a secretary and medical assistant while raising two daughters. They moved to Calgary in 1963, and Dorothy brought her warm charm and friendly personality to the city. Dorothy, a devoted daughter, retired from work and began a long relationship of caring for her parents, who had also moved to Calgary. Involved in her favorite pastimes of golf, curling, and playing bridge, Dorothy made many friends, who were sad to see her and Walter retire to Langely, B.C. in 1971. Always forward planning, they returned to Calgary in 1996 in order to be closer to their daughters. Dorothy again began to make many friends in Calgary, but a new challenge appeared when Walter grew ill. She devoted herself to caring for him until his death. Dorothy is survived by her two daughters and two sons-in-law, Anne & Roger Hughson, of Calgary, and their children, Jesse and Kate; Norrie Duncan & Hilary Bonokoski, of London Ontario, and their children, Noel and Arden; and by her numerous nieces and nephews. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all those who knew her. Memorial Services will be held at Woodcliff United Church (5510 Spruce Drive S.W.), on Wednesday December 27, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert W. Mutlow officiating.
