Obituary of Carol Gladys Bates
Carol Gladys Bates, beloved wife of Hugh Bates, of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at the age of 62 years.
Carol was born on April 12, 1944 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where she grew up the only daughter of William and Nina Briggs. She attended Queen’s University in Belfast and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree and later a Teaching Degree from Stranmillis University College. Carol married Hugh Bates on July 27, 1967. They immigrated to Calgary in November of 1978, where she continued to raise her family at home until 1987 when she began teaching again at Bowness, Henry Wisewood and Dr. E.P. Scarlet High Schools. Carol had a love of literature and was a dedicated teacher. Due to ill health, Carol resigned from teaching to be with her family. She was an Elder and Clerk of Sessions at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. A loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she will be greatly missed.
Besides her loving husband Hugh, Carol is survived by her children, Fiona, Sarah and Edward Bates and their respective spouses, Colin Andrews, Jaysen Wesolosky and Daphne Bates as well as her granddaughter Ashlynn Bates. She is also survived by her father William Briggs, brother and sister-in-law Trevor and Yvonne Briggs, of Northern Ireland, as well as family in the United Kingdom. She was predeceased by her mother Nina Briggs.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Drive S.W.) on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
