Obituary of Veletta Black

Veletta M. Black of Calgary passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, November 26, 2006, with family at her side. Born in Edmonton on May 21, 1920, Val was the youngest child of Alfred and Clara Alexander of Prince George, BC, where she resided until moving to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta. There she achieved her BA in Home Economics, and met her husband Frank Black of Calgary whom she married in June of 1946. They enjoyed fifty-three years together until Frank’s passing in 1999. Val enjoyed golfing at the Calgary Golf and Country Club, and was a volunteer for many years with the Samaritan Club of Calgary. During Frank’s years of involvement with the Rotary Club of South Calgary, Val was active with the Rotary Anns where she helped support Rotary projects. She was a member of St. Phillip Anglican Church. Val was known for her love of cooking, particularly for family and friends. Her recipes were compiled in a cookbook dedicated to her family of which was appropriately named “That Was Good, Mom”. Val is survived by her loving children, Dr. Barry and Georgia Black and their children Noel, Graeme, and Alex; Barbara and Marshall Davidson and their children Heather and Robbie, all of Calgary, and Beverley and Mike Fraser and Kimberley and great-grandson Kolbe, of Kailua – Kona, Hawaii; her cousins Robert and Evelyn Black and family, of Calgary; her niece, Lavyna Alexander of Sooke, BC, and her good friend Gord West of Calgary. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark’s Anglican Church (1802 – 33 Avenue S.W.), on Friday December 8, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. Reception will follow. Forward condolences to mcinnisandholloway.com.
