Obituary of Mary Shkuratoff
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our aunt, Mary Shkuratoff. She passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on November 21, 2006, at the age of 71 years.
Mary was born in Blackie, Alberta and lived in the Milo district until 1954. In 1955 Mary moved to Calgary to attend the University of Calgary. In 1956 she began her teaching career in Mossleigh and after two years she returned to Calgary where she spent the next thirty years teaching. In addition to her career, Mary continued to attend university and in 1972 she completed her Bachelor of Education degree. She was a well respected and much loved teacher until her retirement in 1988. Mary taught herself how to play the piano. She loved music and dance and was a member of the University Ballroom Dance Club. She was an active member of various clubs and had many friends with the Ramblers Hiking Group, The Calgary YWCA and the Alberta Teachers Association. During her retirement she discovered a love for traveling and enjoyed seeing new places. Aunt Mary also found the time to research and document our family history and for that we will always be grateful.
She was predeceased by her parents William and Polly Shkuratoff of Milo; her brother William Shkuratoff of Oliver, BC; her sister Pauline Horkoff; and her brother-in-law Nick Horkoff of Vulcan, AB. She is survived by her sister-in-law Pauline Shkuratoff of Oliver; as well as her nieces and nephews and many friends. We would like to extend our thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Foothills Hospital for their compassion and care.
In celebration of Mary’s life we ask that you spend time with a friend, share a laugh or a dance with someone you care about, and take time to help someone less fortunate. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made in Mary’s memory to the Faculty of Education at the University of Calgary Development Office, 2500 University Drive N.W., T2N-1N4. Any special memories of Mary or expressions of condolence may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. We will add these to our family history book that is Mary’s gift to us and future generations.
