Obituary of Helen Volk

Helen “Gumbo” Florence Volk (nee Johnson) of Calgary passed away with her family by her side on Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at the age of 92 years. Helen was born on January 8, 1914 in the Two Hills District, the youngest child of Frank and Ellen Johnson. She was raised and attended school there before moving to Edmonton to complete high school. She later graduated from the Royal Alexandra Hospital School of Nursing in 1935. After nursing in various areas Helen married Tony Volk on June 4, 1941 in Vegreville. Her career spanned over seventy years, nursing in Vancouver, Edmonton, Vegreville, and finally Two Hills for over thirty years. She moved to Calgary in 1987 after Tony passed away. Helen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Leola and Nick Greckol, of Calgary; three grandchildren: Louella Greckol of Red Deer, Laureen Greckol of Calgary, and Neil (Junko Noguchi) Greckol of Vancouver; two great-grandchildren: Gerrit and Tyler; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Tony, Helen was predeceased by a grandson Murray; and siblings Minnie, Algot, Tillie, Elna, Peggy, Edith, and Agnes. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.) on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev.
