Obituary of Neil McMillan

Dr. Neil John (Jack) McMillan passed away peacefully on November 7, 2006, after living courageously with Parkinson’s disease. Born November 11, 1925, in Souris, Manitoba, Jack was a distinguished geologist, whose work took him all over the world, temporarily settling in Kansas, New Guinea, Australia and Texas before making Calgary his home in 1964. He will be most remembered by his colleagues for his work mapping the High Arctic during Operation Franklin (1955), his discovery of fossil forests in the Arctic, his research pioneering petroleum exploration off the coast of Labrador, and his presidency of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (1977). Jack was quite involved with Scarboro United Church and extended his compassion and activities to its social justice campaigns. He maintained a passion for his beloved Manitoba and travelled there extensively; as well as to his family roots in Scotland. His gifts to his children included a love of exploration and discovery, camping and canoeing. He leaves behind his children David (Danielle), Elizabeth Anne, and Paul (Michelle); his grand-children Christopher, Matthew, Stirling and Duncan; his brothers Bob (Elaine) and Bill; numerous nieces and nephews, and dear friends Rae, Ariel and Letti.
