Obituary of Matilda Velker

Matilda Velker of Calgary, formerly of Rockyford, AB, passed away on Monday, October 30, 2006 at the age of 97 years. Matilda was born on June 14, 1909 in Beiseker, AB to Ludwig and Juliana Schmaltz, the first settlers in the Beiseker area. In 1929, she married Tony. They lived in Sunnyslope, AB until 1936, when they moved to Rockyford, AB. Tony and Matilda retired to Calgary in 1972. Matilda loved life and was happiest when she was playing bridge, working in her garden, or entertaining family and friends. She loved her grandchildren who knew that she was always available with love and support. Matilda was a member of the Catholic Woman’s League and recently received her pin for seventy years of faithful service. Matilda will be lovingly remembered by her children, Merlin (Sonia) Velker, Gene (Pat) McCarthy, Millie (Al) Krenzel, Darlene (Bryce) Humphreys and Lucille (Ken) Winger. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Shawn (Kelly) McCarthy, David (Bridget) McCarthy, Erin (Steve) Hruska, Gayle (Tony), Wendy Krenzel (June Hamer), Pam (Doug) Martineau, Lynn (Ron) Wilson, Amy Humphreys (Keith Kress), Leah Humphreys, Sara Winger and Anthony (Sandy) Winger; as well as her great grandchildren, Kayla, Melissa, Torey, Kaden, Chelsea, Ashley, Bailey, Barrett, Shea, Trista, Ethan, MacKenzie, Haley and Sam. Matilda was looking forward to the arrival for her fifteenth great grandchild due in December. Matilda was predeceased by her husband Tony in June of 1976. Relatives and Friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at the Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church (835 Northmount Drive N.W.) on Friday, November 3, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at St. Rita’s Catholic Church (Rockyford, AB) on Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. James Hagel, Matilda’s nephew, presider. Graveside Service to follow at St. Rita’s Cemetery, Rockyford, AB. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family wishes to thank the Doctors, nurses and staff at the Foothills Hospital Unit 46 for the love, support, understanding, and comfort shown to Matilda and her family.
