Obituary of Robert Strother

Robert (Bob) Strother passed away peacefully on October 26, 2006 at the age of 82. He was known for his contagious smile, gentle manner and respect for everyone. His life was an inspiration with many accomplishments. As a boy, his family was with the CPR and they moved to many new places. With each new town, Bob’s love of sports and people quickly found him with new friends and feats. He was a superb athlete making headlines in hockey, track and field, baseball and football. Like many persons of the “greatest generation” he followed the call from boyhood to manhood, serving as an officer in Royal Canadian Navy in World War II. Upon returning, he attended the University of Alberta where “Lefty” starred for the Golden Bears Basketball Team. It was there where he met his beloved Lucy, wife of 57 years, who survives him. In the late 1950’s, Bob and Lucy moved their new family to Calgary where he had a long and distinguished business career, retiring as President of Husky Oil International. Bob pursued golf as a passion with his many friends at the Calgary Golf and Country Club and enjoyed the Oilman’s Golf Tournament where he served as a Governor. He was actively involved in the community serving as Chair of the United Way’s Business Campaign, the Founding Board of the Centre for the Performing Arts and as a supporter of many causes. As Bob moved into retirement he found great pleasure in their home in Tucson. It was the site of family visits and the sunshine he loved so dearly. In this period his sons Rob and Ralph, with their wives Kathryn and Sue, enjoyed many precious moments with Bob and Lucy. It was also where Bob’s passion for his granddaughters – Lauren, Kristi and Christine – came to life. They shared many tender moments laughing and going on “bunny hunts” with “Papa”. In his last years Bob displayed courage and determination that grew from his deep faith, love of life and spirit. Throughout his lifetime he experienced extraordinary care from his doctors, nurses and caregivers. Special thanks go out to Drs. Roth, Thomas and Belinkie. Unit 81 at the Foothills and the Southwood Hospice helped us all with their sincere and gentle ways. All friends are warmly invited to the Funeral Mass at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church (5340 – 4th Street S.W.) on Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow immediately at the Calgary Golf and Country Club. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Bob’s name to The Calgary Foundation. In living memory of Robert Strother, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.
