Obituary of Vernon Lyle Horte

Vernon L. Horte passed away suddenly on Saturday October 14, 2006, at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary at the age of 81 years. Born at Kingman, Alberta, on July 12, 1925, he served with the RCAF during World War II and graduated as a chemical engineer from the University of Alberta in 1949. His career in the petroleum industry spanned five decades from the 1950’s through the 1990’s, during which he rose to become President & COO of TransCanada Pipelines, President & CEO of the Canadian Arctic Gas Project, and a founder of Progas Ltd. He also served on numerous corporate boards and gave generously of his time as a mentor to young business people. He was inducted into the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame in 2005. In recent years he committed himself tirelessly to the care of his beloved wife and daughter in their struggles with illness. His devotion to family, loyal friendship and unfailing optimism will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife Thelma; daughter Joan; son Robert; son and daughter-in-law Douglas and Bonnie; sister Vivian; and grandchildren Erica, Karen and Gary.
