Obituary of Niranjan Singh Gill

Niranjan Gill, beloved husband of Baljinder (Bali) Gill, of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at the age of 91 years. Born on September 15, 1915 in Dhudike, Punjab, India, Niranjan Singh Gill was the son of Baba Phakar Singh, a legendary freedom fighter. Coming from a poor family that could not afford to send him to school, Niranjan defied the odds by educating himself. Through much adversity, he completed a college education studying at home. Niranjan moved to Canada in 1950 determined to build a new life. He enrolled at the UBC in 1952 and completed a B.A. one year later and by 1954, he had obtained his M.A. in Education. He taught in many places including Milk River and the last fifteen years in Brooks, AB. At sixty years of age, Niranjan found his true calling and built a successful business in real estate. Aside from his tremendous educational and financial success, as the patriarch of a large family, he was instrumental in assisting numerous relatives in immigrating to Canada and achieving their dreams. He has also given back to his village of Dhudike by establishing the Education scholarship Trust which provides funding for education and clothing for under privileged families. Besides his loving wife of forty-three years, Niranjan is survived by his son Paul; daughter and son-in-law, Mariane and Steve Cunningham; two precious grandchildren, Jai and Shane Cunningham, as well as numerous close family and friends.
